Hearing loss affects many people and can occur at any stage in life. There are different types of hearing loss so it’s important to be diagnosed properly or to know the cause of the hearing loss before deciding on the treatment
Noise Induced
Noise induced hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss. There are several ways to reduce the level of noise but once the damage is done there isn’t much you can do. It’s a common misconception that you have to be exposed to a noise for an extended period of time to do damage to the ear but it may only be a single loud noise or one instance that causes the damage. The first symptom you may notice is that you are no longer able to hear high pitched sounds. As the loss progresses speech may be heard but not easily understood. This is due to the disturbance of background noise making speech incomprehensible. Tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ear due to a build up of pressure against the inner ear, may also occur.
Since it is easier to prevent noise induced hearing loss than it is to treat the condition, take the necessary precautions when exposed to loud noises. Wearing ear plugs or ear defenders while working in noisy areas is a must. Also avoid listening to loud music through earphones or standing too close to speakers at a concert or event.
Central Hearing Loss
Central hearing loss is less common but can affect anyone from children to adults to the elderly. This type of hearing loss is caused by auditory nerve damage or damage to the brain pathway. Symptoms of central hearing loss include word deafness or difficulty with word comprehension. Auditory hallucinations and problems recognizing nonword sounds may also occur. Sudden hearing loss is also one of the major symptoms.
High Frequency Hearing Loss
High frequency hearing loss is also fairly common and some people may not even know that they suffer from this impairment. Typically people with this kind of hearing loss have trouble hearing high octaves such as a child’s or a woman’s voice or the sound of chirping birds. High frequency hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud music on a regular basis or from airbag deployment. Regular use of a cell phone may also cause this type of hearing loss.
If you notice any of these symptoms of the different types of hearing loss speak with your doctor to be tested. Men are more likely to experience hearing loss than women. Hearing loss is also more common to occur as we age with 47% of adults over 75 having some form of hearing impairment. Learn the signs, use preventative measures and seek treatment when needed to keep your hearing at peak performance.
